British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
