The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
