Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
